Answers

1. How do I know this is not a fraud?
We think, skepticism is a good and healthy thing, but when you are selling a ground breaking product, and you're doing it on a legal basis, correctly and with the best of intentions, skepticism can become a real problem. We do receive, from time to time, a few understandable enquiries asking us if this is a joke or not. We know that the Internet contains many joke sites, as well as many disreputable sites designed for purely fraudulent purposes.

We would like to reassure you that this is not such a site. However, due to the uniqueness of the product on sale here, we wish to give you this written reassurance. It is of course difficult to determine if this is a fraud while you are just sitting there surfing the net. Let us explain what the Lunar Embassy is actually doing. Dennis Hope has been in the business of selling Lunar Property since 1980. In all this time, and millions of customers later (and increasing rapidly), we have never had a single unsatisfied customer. We are very proud of this track record. Two former US Presidents and many very prominent celebrities own their Lunar property already. The worldwide press attention the Lunar Embassy is receiving is enormous. (Please view the Press section of our web site for further information.)

If you still think this is a fraud, we would like you to ask one of the Internet's best known and vigilant consumer watchdog organizations called Netcheck. The Lunar Embassy is a member of the Netcheck Internet Commerce Bureau. There you can consult our company register, and see if anyone has filed a complaint against our company. Furthermore, you cannot become a member of Netcheck unless you conduct a legitimate business. If you are still skeptical after that, well, we still don't blame you. Selling property on the Moon through the internet must surely be one of the strangest things you've ever come across.

2. What is the Lunar Embassy's legal basis for selling extraterrestrial properties?
Well, there are several parts to this answer. First, if you want to sell extraterrestrial property (or Earth property for that matter) it must be yours. If the property never belonged to anyone, like the Moon or the other eight planets, you must establish a legal basis of ownership.

Contrary to popular belief, ownership by individuals of extraterrestrial properties is not forbidden. The 1967 UN Outer Space Treaty stipulates that no government can own extraterrestrial property, but it neglected to mention individuals or corporations. In 1984, the UN attempted to plug this loophole (which they where very aware of), by introducing the ill-fated Moon Treaty. That treaty forbids the exploitation of extraterrestrial resources (which includes ownership) for anyone, also individuals and corporations. The only problem is, that when it was up for vote, out of 185 UN Member Nations, only six supported it. The vast majority of Member States refused to sign it and did not sign it. This makes sense too. Imagine if we find oil on the Moon for example. Should we prohibit its exploitation for the entire human race by law? Surely not. So, to make a long story short, the loophole still exists today, and for a reason. (More details can be found under our Space Law FAQ section.)

Therefore, one can become the legal owner of an extraterrestrial body, if you are the first one that claimed it, and that being the Lunar Embassy.

It's a bit like in the old west: Who stakes their claim on a piece of land first, gets the best property. This is modeled on old American law. Such a claim must be registered with your local Governmental Office for claim registries. In regard to Lunar properties, it obviously helps, if this is also done in the USA, as the Americans were the first to walk on the Moon and plant their flag on it. (It could be argued, that if the Moon ever belonged to anyone, it certainly belongs more to the USA than any other nation).

In 1980, Dennis Hope, went to his local US Governmental Office for claim registries, the San Francisco County Seat. He made a claim for the entire lunar surface, as well as the surface of all the other eight planets of our solar system and their moons (except Earth and the sun). Obviously, he was at first taken for a crackpot. Then after 3 supervisors and 5 hours later, the main supervisor accepted, and registered his claim.

Now, even if you get the claim registered, you are definitely not out of the woods yet. You must inform others. For example, at the same time, the Lunar Embassy was obligated to inform the General Assembly of the United Nations and the Russian Government in writing of the claim and the legal intent to sell extraterrestrial properties. The US government had several years to contest such a claim. They never did. Neither did the United Nations nor the Russian Government. This allowed Mr. Hope to take the next step and copyright his work with the US Copyright Registry Office. So, with his claim and Copyright Registration Certificate from the US Government in hand, Mr. Hope became what is probably the largest landowner on the planet today. This is the legal basis by which the Lunar Embassy is selling extraterrestrial properties. For all these reasons, the Lunar Embassy has been able to conduct their business without any reproach from the US Government (or any other government) since 1980, and all governments are aware that the sale of extraterrestrial property is ongoing. The kindest reaction of the US Government was actually, that two former Presidents became Moon property owners.

Finally, please note, that there are a few copycat web sites that have appeared on the Internet also selling extraterrestrial properties. These companies have never made a claim, nor can prove such a claim. Furthermore, they are infringing on the Lunar Embassy's copyright...and worse...they are pretending to sell our (and your) property! (Needless to say the Lunar Embassy has begun taking legal actions against these fraudulent companies.) If you see such a web site ask them what their legal basis is for selling extraterrestrial properties. Regardless of what they may have or will tell you, please know, the Lunar Embassy was the first to file the claim and was the first to sell extraterrestrial property on any celestial body dating back to 1980. But as with all good things, good ideas get copied, whether it's illegal to do so or not seems not to affect these people.

3. If this is for real? Why is it a novel gift?
We use this statement in two contexts: The first as defined in the American Heritage Dictionary. The quality of being novel: 1) something new and unusual and 2) a small mass-produced article. Well, property on the Moon definitely falls into these categories.

The second context is on the recommendation from our legal team from 1980 when this all began. Classifying the Lunar property as a novelty gift helps to avoid any frivolous lawsuits from a foreign country. You should know that this does not diminish the value of the property that you purchase in any way. Every deed is recorded and registered in the Lunar Embassy's registration database and every owner's information is listed with that registration. This is your legal property and you own it.

4. Why is it so cheap?
If it's expensive, not everyone will be able to own an extraterrestrial property which would take all the fun and romance out of it. After all, this is an exciting adventure and we wish to share this with as many people who would like to share it with us.

5. What name will appear on the deed?
If you purchase the Standard Gift Package, the deed comes sealed in a gift pack without a name printed on it. This allows you to fill in your own name or the name of another if you were giving the property as a gift or otherwise.

If you purchased the Premium or Deluxe Gift Package, the name you specify in the checkout process will be imprinted on the deed. If you do not provide the name you would like to be printed on your Premium or Deluxe Gift Package, we will automatically print the name of the person the package is being shipped to. We also custom frame the Lunar Deed and pre register the acre if you request it.

Registering your acre of the Moon is an easy yet important part of the package. Each deed of Lunar property is unique and no acre of land can be sold twice. Providing the necessary information for the new land owner to be registered with the Lunar Embassy insures that the property holder is listed on file in the database for all landowners. The Trailblazer, a TransOrbital mission to the Moon, will deposit the names of the property holders listed in the database, on the Lunar surface. Each package contains the deed for one acre of land and it lists the actual location of the property by quadrant, latitude and longitude. A lunar map accompanies this, marked with an X showing the location of the property. This way when you look up at the moon you can visually locate where your acre is.

(Please note that your deed and title are legal documents. Please enter the complete, full legal name of the property owner on the Lunar Deed.)

6. Can I charge NASA if they land on my property?
No you can't. No celestial body is owned by NASA and they have never claimed them.

Further, the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, which is law, clearly states that the Moon and the other celestial bodies are the heritage of all mankind for the purposes of exploration. So NASA can do what they like and where they like, as long as they are exploring. But if someone wants to build a house or drill for minerals or water on your property, that is quite a different issue altogether.

The Lunar Embassy has never and will never sell a past or planned NASA landing site on any celestial body.

7. What guarantee do I have that you won't sell the same property twice?
No property is sold twice. The land has been carefully mapped out and a database is held of all property registrations.

8. What if someone else tries to sell me land on the Moon?
Should anyone else claim to be selling Lunar property, they are doing so in an unlawful manner.

These companies have never made, nor can prove such a claim. Furthermore, they are infringing on the Lunar Embassy's copyright...and worse...they are pretending to sell our (and your) property! (Needless to say the Lunar Embassy has begun taking legal actions against these fraudulent companies.) If you see such a web site, ask them what their legal basis is for selling extraterrestrial properties. Regardless of what they may have told you, please know, the Lunar Embassy was the first to file the claim and was the first to sell extraterrestrial property on any celestial body. But as with all good things, good ideas get copied, whether it's illegal to do so or not seems not to affect these people.

9. Will my children inherit the property?
Absolutely, or whomever you decide to leave it to. This is actually one of the important points about buying an extraterrestrial property. It may turn out to become a valuable investment to future generations. We may not be able to get there yet and live there on a constant basis, but it is pretty certain that one day we will be able to live on many planets and moons in the Solar System. In a few hundred years for example, large colonies on the Moon are a probable reality. The Artemis Project is already planning a profitable lunar venture and colony, and the Japanese are planning to go back to the Moon for commercial reasons since quite some time now. Undoubtedly, it will happen.

10. Can I buy one of the NASA landing sites?
Unfortunately, certain places on the Moon and the other planets are not for sale because we firmly believe that they should remain for the good of all Mankind. This includes all the Apollo Landing sites, the Viking and Pathfinder landing sites, the Face and Pyramids of Mars, as well as the crater on the Moon on which water has apparently been found, but not yet confirmed. It would be irresponsible of the Lunar Embassy to sell these historic areas and sole natural resources.

Furthermore, you should know that the Outer Space Treaty of 1967 declares the Moon as "the heritage of all Mankind, for the purposes of exploration", and that is pretty clear and unambiguous. This means that even if you have your property, if NASA wishes to land on it to explore, they can, and they have a perfect legal right to do so. If however someone wants to land on your property to do something else, such as build or mine minerals, that is a different issue entirely.

Yes, this does mean that NASA can go where they wish. Apart from that, we at the Lunar Embassy have no desire at all to stop NASA doing what it is that they do best, even if the bodies in question have been claimed by us. After all, without these pioneers, we wouldn't even know what the place looks like, never mind be able to sell it.

11. Who on earth is this "Head Cheese" guy anyways?
Throughout the context of this site, news articles and other web sites, Dennis Hope is sometimes referred to as the "Head Cheese". This is a nickname he has developed over the years. Dennis Hope, a.k.a. "Head Cheese", is the Director of the Lunar Embassy and the man who had all the right ideas at all the right moments.

12. So what about the future?
The Lunar Embassy is currently in the process of preparing the sale of property on Mars, Venus, and Jupiter Moon's Io. Also, other planets and moons within our solar system are being considered.

Will new laws be established? Well, so far, we are not aware of anyone trying to make them, nor are we aware of anyone who has the jurisdiction to make them.

13. And the most important point?

In all of that, let's not miss the most important point of all....and it specifically applies to the Moon: What is the Moon to us?

The Moon is a symbol of hope, romance, achievement and change, all rolled into one. There is nothing more symbolic and romantic on Earth one can give to a loved one. It is not a fad we can toy with, it is not something that will ever lose its appeal. When you buy your property on the Moon or any other planet, please enjoy it, because that is what this really is all about. You can look into the night sky and say "I own a piece of that!"
